What You Do:
1.) Print two copies of the r-controlled vowel word cards, preferably on card stock or some heavy paper.
2.) Cut out the word cards and select 40 cards (20 pairs). Be sure to include some words from each of the five r-controlled vowel combinations.
3.) Place the selected cards face down on the table and mix them up.
4.) Arrange the face-down cards into rows on the table.
5.) You and your child take turns flipping over 2 cards at a time. While cards are being flipped up, read the words aloud. If a match is made, take the pair of cards and take another turn. If another match is made, take the pair or cards and take another turn. If a match is not made, return the cards face down on the table and it’s the other person’s turn. See how well you can remember the cards!
6.) When all of the cards on the table have been matched, count your pairs. The person with the higher number of pairs wins.
Variations: When these words start getting easy for your child, you may consider using more cards or vary the words that you choose to use, from easier to more difficult words. For an extra challenge, you can have your child read the words and use them in sentences as you play the game together.
